Measure aiming to curb telemarketers proposed in N.J.

A measure to crack down on unwanted telemarketing calls is making its way through the New Jersey legislature.

The “do-not-call list” is supposed to prevent unsolicited calls, and most robocalls are prohibited, but state Sen. Jeff Van Drew said the number of those calls made to New Jersey residents is increasing.

His legislation would create a telemarketing fraud unit within the Division of Consumer Affairs to investigate consumer complaints.

“A good number of them are fraudulent and even more [they’re] breaking the law because they’re calling you, and they’re not supposed to be, and they’re not identifying themselves, and you don’t have a prior relationship with them,” said Van Drew. “So this is a way to make sure that the current law, which is good, is actually enforced.”

Getting as much information as you can from those callers can help authorities deal with your complaint, said Van Drew, D-Atlantic.
