Kent County man shot after assaulting Delaware trooper with taser

A Delaware man is recovering after being shot by a state trooper during an altercation Wednesday afternoon.

According to Delaware State Police, Glenn Sergo Jr. was shot once in the leg by the trooper after he tasered the officer with her own weapon.

The incident happened just before 3 p.m. when the 25-year-old officer was responding to a call of a suicidal man at a home in Hartley. When the she approached the residence, Sergo came out of a side door and began walking to the backyard.

The officer asked Sergo to stop so she could talk to him and when he refused, she followed him behind an abandoned trailer on the property.

That’s when Sergo allegedly began hitting the officer with a metal cane. The officer removed her taser in an attempt to arrest Sergo but he was able to grab it and use it on her.

The officer then used her gun to fire one shot at Sergo.

Sergo was transported to Christiana Hospital Trauma Center with non-life threatening injuries.

He will be formally charged with assaulting a police officer, possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, and resisting arrest after he’s released from the hospital.

The trooper, who has been with the department for a year and a half, has been put on administrative leave pending the investigation.
