More info about this month’s train derailment over the Schuylkill River is leaking (too soon?). According to The Inquirer, train derailment experts from as far away as Alaska have been working in 12-hour shifts for more than a week to remove tens of thousands of gallons of crude oil and more than 1.8 million pounds of train cars from the Schuylkill Arsenal Bridge. The more than 100 workers who have been laboring day and night faced additional challenges with the cold.
The fate of Boyd Theater is also hanging in limbo. Yesterday, a Philadelphia Historical Commision panel heard four hours of testimony for and against the prospect of redeveloping the theater. The panel did not make a decision before the meeting adjourned, but discussion and testimony will continue on a committee level or during the commission’s February meeting.

A group in Germantown wants the Philadelphia Police Department to open a mini-station in the neighborhood. The group has their eye on the second floor of the Queens Lane Station ticket office, which SEPTA would lease to the police department for $1.
Philadelphia police and the Asociacion Puertorriquenos en March (APM) got some positive attention during “Safe Streets, Strong Communities,” a symposium held in New York City last week. The one-day symposium focused on how local police and community development groups can compliment each other’s efforts to reduce crime. The collaboration between Philadelphia police and APM in North Philly communities was used as a positive example.
The Passyunk Avenue Revitalization Corporation will publicly unveil plans for a redesigned “gateway” at the intersection of Passyunk Ave, Broad Street and McKean Street. The flex space, which will be built this summer with financial support from the William Penn Foundation, will include better lighting, seating, a water feature, built-in speakers, a bike-share station and more.
