Housing project for elderly gays gets OK in Philly
Organizers say they plan to break ground next month on an affordable housing project for elderly gays in Philadelphia now that it has received the necessary state, federal and local approvals.
The 56-unit, $19 million development is planned for a section of Philadelphia’s downtown affectionately known as the Gayborhood.The project had been stalled for years before receiving tax credits earlier this year from the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency.
Officials say the project is moving forward and development plans are under way. All of the funding for the $20 million project has also been secured.
Anti-discrimination laws prohibit gay-only housing, but projects can be made GLBT-friendly through marketing and location. The nation’s first gay-friendly affordable senior housing facility opened in Los Angeles in 2007.
