Hit-and-run driver kills man on Turnpike in Mt. Laurel

A Texas man with dementia was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver on the New Jersey Turnpike, authorities said.

State police said Michael Shimanek was on foot when he was hit early Tuesday near milepost 34.3 in Mount Laurel. His body was found later that day, down an embankment off of the right side of the highway’s northbound lanes.

The 68-year-old Granbury man had been staying at nearby hotel and wandered away after it was evacuated in the overnight hours due to an activated fire alarm.

State police are seeking the public’s help with identifying the driver, who did not stop after hitting Shimanek.
