First cleanup at new Mt. Airy public park site makes room for walking trail [gallery]

After a nearly two decade long citizen-led effort, six acres of formerly privately owned land in East Mt. Airy recently became part of Fairmount Park. Wissahickon East Project, the Friends of the Wissahickon and the Department of Parks & Recreation held the first formal cleanup of the site this past weekend.

Over 50 volunteers showed up on Saturday morning at the site on Woodbrook Lane and Anderson Street to help clear the land of debris, leaning trees and invasive plant species and make room for a walking trail.

Going forward, the Wissahickon East Project  — the group that led the movement to transform the plot to park land — is looking to introduce more native species to the area to “support human recreation and animal habitats,” according to Antje Mattheus, managing advisor of the group.
