DuPont penalized for hazardous waste violations

DuPont’s Experimental Station in Wilmington has been penalized for not complying with hazardous waste requirements.
The company was ordered to pay a fine of $53,600 for the violations, along with a $3,350 fee for an investigation conducted by the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control.
The facility, which is a large-quantity generator of hazardous waste and a permitted storage facility, failed to properly maintain its waste three times over a 14-month period, according to a Notice of Administrative Penalty issued by DNREC Secretary Shawn Garvin.
During a compliance assessment in May, DNREC representatives found DuPont stored waste past the one-year limit and did not properly identify hazardous waste.
Two months later, DNREC found another violation of storing hazardous waste beyond the one-year limit.
DuPont can appeal the order within 30 days.
