David Matusiewicz, son of New Castle County Courthouse shooter, remains behind bars

The son of the New Castle County courthouse shooter will remain behind bars for now.

David Matusiewicz waived his preliminary detention hearing this afternoon and will remain jailed pending a revocation hearing to be determined.

Matusiewicz has been in custody since Monday following a deadly morning shooting carried out by his father, Thomas Matusiewicz who killed his ex-daughter-in-law Christine Belford and her friend Laura Elizabeth Mulford before turning the gun on himself. Two Capitol police officers were also injured.

He remains in custody for probation violations.

According to the court, Matusiewicz was granted permission to travel from his residence in Southern Texas to Delaware for a child support hearing scheduled on February 11. He made arrangements to stay with his uncle, Thomas Kula in New Jersey, however Matusiewicz spent the night at a friend’s house in Elkton, Maryland.

Kula was present at today’s hearing along with Matusiewicz’s court appointed attorney Dina Chavar.

Matusiewicz is also accused of failing to pay child support and restitution.

According to published reports, search warrants revealed guns and ammunition inside the car used by Matusiewicz to drive to the Elkton residence. The report added that the car was registered to Matusiewicz’s father. Guns and ammunition were also discovered at the Matusiewicz’s home and storage unit in Texas.

No gun charges have been filed against Matusiewicz.

A memorial for Mulford will be held Feb 16. Another hearing date for David Matusiewicz has not been set.
