Revisit Collingwood’s past with an architectural history walking tour, Sept. 18

Proud Neighbors of Collingswood, New Jersey, will be hosting an architectural history walking tour of Collingswood on Sunday, Sept. 18, 2016.

Neighbors and others are invited to stroll the borough on one of the final days of summer while learning about Collingswood’s past.

There are five contiguous docent-led tours which will depart every hour from noon to 4 p.m.

The three residential tours are limited to 15 people. They include the Mansion Tour, featuring homes in Colonia Revival, Queen Anne, English Tudor Revival and Italianate Villa styles; the Bungalow Tour, highlighting the Merrick Villa colony developed in 1910 and the Collings Ave. Tour with focus on homes on the historic register like the Hurley Mansion (right photo)  and the Collings-Knight House, built in the 19th century by a descendant of one the area’s original settlers, Robert Zane.

Each tour is a kilometer in length (that’s 5/8 of a mile for those who attended school after the Carter administration) and 45 minutes in duration.

There will also be two open-capacity walking tours of Collingswood’s business district, led by Mayor Maley and Commissioner Leonard. These tours will showcase architectural development on Haddon Ave. Mayor Miley will also discuss redevelopment projects on the avenue.

The business district tours last 90 minutes.

All tours wrap up with a chance to tour the newest business at the Lumberyard, Devil Creek Brewery from 4 – 7 p.m. Participants are welcome to hoist a few with their neighbors after the tour (beverage purchases separate).

Tickets cost $10 and cover all five tours.
