Road repairs underway on Germantown Avenue in Chestnut Hill

A project to reset the cobblestones on Germantown Avenue has the parking lanes blocked in Chestnut Hill this week. Signs posted on the avenue from Mermaid Lane up to Southampton Ave warning motorists that cars parked in this area will be towed.

“They’re going to be moving around,” said PennDOT spokesman Charles Metzger. “It’s not a long-stretch parking restriction.”

PennDOT moved its project to replace three years of wear and tear on Germantown Avenue’s cobblestones to Chestnut Hill on Wednesday. The work is being done from Mermaid Lane to Southampton Avenue. According to the signage, parking is only restricted until the end of Friday.

Metzger said the construction is in its first stages—which requires workers to remove debris from the cracks in between the cobblestones.

Cars obstructing the work will be towed so the work can get done, he said.

In an earlier statement, PennDOT spokesman Gene Blaum said the project will be finished early to mid-June.

Pedestrians must be aware that since workers are using pressurized air to force stones out of the cobblestone’s crevasses that excess materials may fly out onto the sidewalk.

Motorists must also be aware that workers might be stepping into the edge of the lanes from time to time.
