Belated parade celebrates Northwest Raiders’ Pop Warner Super Bowl win

Philadelphia’s Northwest Raiders were celebrated on Saturday with a parade down Chelten Avenue in Germantown. The team captured the “Midget” Pop Warner Super Bowl in mid-December after beating Connecticut’s New Britain Raiders 26-6. 

Earlier plans for parades were canceled due to bad weather.

Philadelphia Eagles mascot, Swoop, was on hand to celebrate, as well as the NFL team’s cheerleading squad. 

The Pop Warner Super Bowl win was the athletic association’s first-ever national title. 

“It’s an amazing feeling — nothing like it,” said quarterback Naeem Bonner at the time. “We went down there, handled our business, came back with a trophy.”

The team was later recognized by the Pennsylvania State House in Harrisburg in Feburary. 

“We can be proud of the way the Northwest Raiders played the game — and doubly proud of the fact that they emerged victorious. In so doing, they’ve become role models for countless other youths,” said State Rep. Stephen Kinsey of the resolution honoring the team. 

The Northwest Raiders have played in Germantown since 1971.
