Another pedestrian killed at Delaware beaches

A DART bus hit and killed a man walking his bike along Route 1 in Rehoboth Beach Thursday night.

The 37-year-old victim was walking along the highway with his back to traffic when he was hit and thrown into the median by the bus which had just changed lanes.  The victim’s bike was run over and he was lodged under the bus. The incident happened on northbound Route 1 near the intersection with Shuttle Road around 9:30 p.m.

DelDOT Secretary Shailen Bhatt says the Dept. of Transportation was notified of the incident early this morning.  “Everyone at Delaware Transit Corporation deeply regrets this loss of life and our deepest sympathies go out to the family and friends of this individual.”

Police are not releasing the man’s identity until his next of kin can be notified.  They say he was not carrying a flashlight and did not have a light on his bike while he was walking along the road.

“As per our standard operating procedures, the driver of the bus was immediately taken to a local medical facility for drug and alcohol testing,” said Bhatt.

Just last week, a couple was hit by a car while trying to cross Route 1 following a fireworks display in Dewey Beach.  In that incident, a 79-year-old man was killed and his wife was critically injured after being hit by a car driven by a man from Washington, D.C.  He was charged with driving under the influence.
