A big donation to Philabundance

A regional food hub is receiving some help in a time of need.

Philabundance is receiving 6,000 cans of food from Shop Rite as part of the supermarket chain’s 40th anniversary of their canned goods sale.  Mary Ann Lynch of Philabundance says the cans will go to food banks all over the region.

“It’s huge, we’re seeing an increase in need of about 22 percent by our agencies, and we’re also seeing an increase in need 66 percent over the last two years, so having that many cans of high quality fruits and vegetables will go a long way in going to provide for the families who need it the most,” said Lynch.

Lynch says the donation is significant, but won’t last, especially in the first months of the year when donations are slim.

“What happens after the first of the year is donations plummet, especially food drives and individuals in the community taking an active interest in food banking.”
