An update on Philadelphia public schools

In Philadelphia, there is still no plan for closing a $629 million budget gap facing the Philadelphia School District. Superintendent Arlene Ackerman has asked the City to kick in $102 million to keep things like smaller class sizes, art and music programs and school nurses. The Mayor has suggested a “sugar tax” on sweetened beverages and a property tax increase and City Council is still considering how they will raise the funds. And a hearing scheduled for Tuesday morning regarding School District of Philadelphia teacher layoffs was postponed so the situation is status quo.
