A local company is working on a plan to put solar arrays on the rooftops of 20 local schools.

“I tell this to the students,” [Solar States founder Micah] Gold-Markel said, from atop the Crane Arts building.” This is our opportunity. Look around, open your eyes, this is it. All of these rooftops are here, and they’re waiting for us to get up and put solar on them. We just have to go out and do it.”

An online fundraising campaign for the project has been sluggish. Solar States, the Philadelphia-based B-corp behind the initiative, says it will likely seek grant funding to make it happen.

The vocational training component of the Philadelphia Solar Schools Initiative, currently being piloted by a local charter school, will continue until the end of the school year.
