What’s in a calorie?

What should we be eating to maintain a healthy diet? Low carb? Low fat? It’s been 10 years since science journalist GARY TAUBES New York Times Magazine cover story about eating more fat and less carbohydrates, “What if It’s All Been a Big, Fat Lie?,” was published. Since then he’s challenged the conventional wisdom of calories in, calories out – burned if one just exercises. The United States Department of Agriculture recently revised the so-called food pyramid to encourage the consumption of more whole grains, vegetables and fruits, but Taubes still thinks it’s flawed because of its high carbohydrate content. We’ll discuss sugars and calories and what they mean to weight gain and loss with GARY TAUBES, author of “Why We Get Fat: And What to Do About It.” And DR. GARY FOSTER will join us in-studio to explain how to practically lose weight, not with a particular low carb nor a low fat diet, but sticking to a plan and adhering to it. Dr. Foster is the Director of the Center for Obesity Research and Education at Temple University.
