The first year of President Obama’s second term was filled with political drama, intrigue and disappointments. The flawed roll-out of the Affordable Care Act, revelations regarding the National Security Administration’s information-gathering strategies, and sequesters and government shut-downs fueled the public’s mistrust and failing confidence in government. The country remains politically divided and the economy continues on an uneven path to recovery. An inability to compromise led to what many consider the least productive congress in decades. So what’s going on in Washington and can it be fixed? We’ve invited two Washington observers to help us take inventory of the year in politics and look ahead to what we might expect in 2014. Our guests are ROBERT COSTA, formerly of the National Review who is headed to the Washington Post, and JAMES PETERSON, director of Africana Studies and associate professor of English at Lehigh University.
