SugarHouse casino opens: How did PA get here?

Listen

Hour 1

SugarHouse casino opens today, Philadelphia’s first casino in city limits, after a long and often contentious process that brought legalized gambling to Pennsylvania and now Philly. Joining us to talk about that process and the impact of what once were derided as “slots barns” but which now feature table games, too, and which have siphoned tens of millions of dollars in revenue from Atlantic City and New Jersey tax revenues, is SUZETTE PARMLEY, casino industry reporter for The Philadelphia Inquirer. Then we’ll hear from JAMES BROWNING of Common Cause, with a look at the money that casinos and their investors have contributed to political campaigns in Pennsylvania in the last decade, and which politicians have benefited the most from gambling interests’ largess.
