Newly discovered galaxies
Astronomers now have tools to confirm notions of deep space. They have found many more galaxies out there than expected. These discoveries were aided by two telescopes that enabled this research mounted in an observatory in Chile. Each galaxy contains billions of stars, but how many planets?
Even more amazing is that we are using ground based telescopes as opposed to space based instruments, pointing to the fact that our ground based telescope technology has really improved over the last decade. This week marks the first photo of the sun taken 165 years ago by Leon Foucault, using glass plate negatives. Thousands of years ago Chinese astronomers were observing sun spots and Galileo did the same with eye piece projection. Also, the Russians had a secret around the same time we were sending men to the moon. This, along with what’s in the night sky on this week’s Sky Talk.[audio:st20100329.mp3]
