On the eve of the 150th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s assassination, we’re joined by MARTHA HODES, professor of history at New York University. She’ll discuss her new book Mourning Lincoln on how Americans reacted to his death and how our country continues to mourn Lincoln’s death. She examines a variety of emotions that people had when they heard the news – shock, anger, grief, fear, satisfaction – and what his murder meant for the future of the country, in particular, for the nation’s African Americas. Hodes argues that America certainly wasn’t “united in grief” over President Lincoln’s passing.
