Changing Attitudes Toward Driving and the Automobile

Listen

A recent report from the Federal Highway Administration found that Americans are driving less. Car usage reached its peak in 2007 and has been decreasing ever since, particularly among drivers in their 20s and 30s. Reasons for these changes are varied and may be related to the economy and changes in attitudes about the importance of automobiles in everyday life. Is the American love affair with cars on the wane? Joining us to discuss this cultural shift during this hour of Radio Times are MICHELINE MAYNARD of CurbingCars.com and MIMI SHELLER of Drexel’s Center for Mobilities Research and Policy. We’ll take a look at what all this means for cities, the auto industry, and the next generation of drivers and their way of life.
