The dangers of concussions in young athletes

Listen

Guests:  Kristy Arbogast and Matthew Grady

Despite all the press about the risks of concussions in professional sports, children, coaches and physicians may not fully appreciate the health threats posed by concussions in young athletes. That’s according to a new report, Sports-Related Concussions in Youth: Improving the Science, Changing the Culture, issued by the Institute of Medicine. The report calls for more research about how concussions in children are prevented, diagnosed and managed and also makes recommendations for improving safety equipment standards and changing the culture of sports. Among the authors of the study is KRISTY ARBOGAST, Director of Engineering at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s (CHOP) Center for Injury Research and Prevention. She joins us in the studio along with CHOP sports medicine pediatrician MATTHEW GRADY.
