Tapping support of Pink Boots Society, the Bold Women and Beer festival set for Saturday

The Philadelphia chapter of the Pink Boots Society — an organization that supports women in the craft beer industry — is hosting what it bills as the city’s first women-centered beer festival.

Stouts, IPAs and lagers all will be featured at the Bold Women and Beer festival Saturday.

More than 30 breweries led by women will showcase their brewing styles and flavor combinations featuring seasonal fruits — and even pretzels  — in beer.

Erin Wallace, co-president of the Pink Boots Society’s Philadelphia chapter, owns the Devil’s Den in South Philly and The Old Eagle Tavern in Manayunk.

The festival is a way of highlighting the different roles women play in the craft beer industry, she said.

“I know a lot of people think we’re running the taproom or we’re doing sales, but quite a few of the breweries have women owners and co-owners,” Wallace said. “Quite a few of them are managers. We’re going to have quite a few female brewers there. Women who work more on the science and quality and technician labs.”

Nancy Rigberg, co-owner of Home Sweet Homebrew in Center City, started her business in 1986 with her husband, George Hummel. In the beginning, some customers overlooked her, she said.

“It was hard in those days to get respect as a woman in beer,” Rigberg said. “We would get guys who would come into the store, and, if I were there, they’d ask me questions. They’d turn around later and ask my husband, ‘Well does the girl know anything?'”

Four female-fronted bands will play at the festival. And female-run food trucks with beer-flavored ice cream will be on site.

The festival takes place at Love City Brewing in the Callowhill neighborhood at 1 p.m.

Profits from the festival support scholarships to train more women in brewing.
