Shakeup at the SRC: Nutter replaces Cary with Sylvia Simms
Changes are in store for Philadelphia’s School Reform Commission. Kristen Graham just reported for the Inquirer that Mayor Michael Nutter will replace Commissioner Lorene Cary with parent advocate Sylvia P. Simms. She will serve a four-year term.
Cary is currently on a medical leave of absence, and will not be reappointed. Her term is over at the end of January.
Previously, Simms, a 52-year-old resident of North Philadelphia and a graduate of Simon Gratz High School, was a bus aide who worked with special-needs children. Both of her children graduated from Philadelphia high schools, and her granddaughter attends T.M. Peirce Elementary, one of the schools recently slated to be closed by the district.
