Rival Pa. soccer team hurls Ebola taunts at African player
Two Pennsylvania soccer coaches have resigned after complaints their players hurled Ebola taunts at an opponent from West Africa.
Northampton Area Superintendent Joseph Kovalchik says the boys’ varsity coaches resigned Tuesday.
He says he met with the team Wednesday and will discipline students who violated the school’s anti-discrimination policy.
Authorities say the comments came during a game last week against rival Nazareth Area High School.
Fountain Hill Police Chief Edward Bachert is the Nazareth player’s legal guardian.
Bachert says the 16-year-old is from Guinea, and worries about his parents given the Ebola outbreak there.
He says the boy was shaken by the taunts. But he says Nazareth students have rallied behind him. Some have posted tweets with the hashtag, “EndRacism.”
Northampton is about 55 miles north of Philadelphia.
