Rittenhouse ‘hothouse’

Yesterday I spent a couple of hours in Rittenhouse Square. Armed with a sketchbook and pens, I thought I would draw some of the people enjoying an absolutely beautiful day.

The square was crowded with a cross section of urban types — a rich feast of folks to draw. The problem was that everyone was moving too fast to draw, and I draw fast.

I had to resort to the camera. It turns out that some people are very suspicious of photographers, and I’ve developed no clandestine shooting skills. Even using the camera, I missed some good images — the cop on the segue, people on or walking bicycles, skateboarders, and many great dogs.

Back home I used the photos as references to create these drawings.
