A lifeguard was pulled from the surf off Bradley Beach this afternoon after a wave hit the man while he was paddling a surfboard, sending him into the water, the Asbury Park Press reports

The 24-year-old lifeguard, accompanied by a colleague, was paddling out from the Second Avenue beach at approximately 4:00 p.m. when the incident occurred, the report states.

“The other lifeguard saw him face down in water, swam over and retrieved him,” borough police Chief Len Guida tells the newspaper, adding that the lifeguard was unconscious when pulled from the ocean but quickly regained consciousness.

The rescued lifeguard, who suffered head and neck injuries, was transported by the Bradley Beach Ambulance Squad to the trauma center at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, Guida tells the newspaper.
