Quizzo night in Manayunk, with the NewsWorks crew

What was born Nov. 15, 2010, brings you a daily avalanche of local news, and is dying to hold its first big party?

Would that be NewsWorks.org, the public media Web site that covers Manayunk, Roxborough, East Falls and the rest of Northwest Philadelphia the way great neighborhoods deserve to be covered?

These paragraphs were written in the form of a question because NewsWorks is throwing a party that will come in the form of a question; make that, lots of questions.

It’s NewsWorks Quizzo Night in Manayunk.  It’ll happen at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 18, at the Manayunk Brewery, 4120 Main St.

What’s Quizzo?  It’s a team-based trivia contest – its format invented in Philadelphia –  that is moderated by a lively quizmaster, and is usually accompanied by lots of laughter, nachos and beer.

For NewsWorks Quizzo Night in Manayunk, we’ve brought in Johnny Goodtimes, one of the city’s top quizmasters, as emcee.

Many of the questions will be the typical Quizzo fare about movies, music, TV, sports and pop culture.  But each round will be seasoned with some puzzlers of local flavor, about people, places and lore from Northwest Philadelphia, and Manayunk, Roxborough and East Falls in particular.  (A little hint: Reading NewsWorks.org between now and Quizzo night would be a great way to get a leg up on the competition.)

Your host for the evening will be Megan Pinto, editor of the NewsWorks minisite devoted to news of Manayunk, and the other neighborhoods along Main Street and Ridge Avenue.

Also present will be many of NewsWorks.org’s and WHYY’s best-known journalists.

Amid the merriment, we’ll also be looking for your feedback and ideas on how to make NewsWorks, and its companion radio show, NewsWorks Tonight, better.

There will be prizes for the winning teams.  Some of them might even be fabulous; at least they’ll all be free.

And don’t let this get out too widely, but the first 50 contestants to show up on Oct. 18 will get their first drink on WHYY/NewsWorks.

This event is free to attend, we just ask that you register so we know how many people to expect. Just recruit your team (remember to invite What movie starring John Travolta begins with the scene of a car accident on Lincoln Drive?that nerdy guy who knows the lyrics to every hit song from the ’80s), and show up at Manayunk Brewery on Quizzo Night, ready to stretch your memory muscles.

(Hint) Paying attention to NewsWorks stories and our daily question sample online could pay off.  Here’s the answer to Monday’s question:

What is par for the course at the Walnut Lane Golf Club?
