Pope Francis, a.k.a. @Pontifex, gets real with the faithful
While Pope Francis is being widely reported to be granting indulgences on social media, we intercepted a series of conversations between the pontiff and his faithful Twitter followers.
Pope Francis is in Rio de Janeiro, his first international visit, for this year’s World Youth Day events. Worshipping with the pontiff in person confers upon pilgrims certain indulgences, or “time off” from purgatory, the stopping ground between earth and heaven. The Vatican has invited Catholics who cannot make the pilgrimage in person to follow the pontiff on social media, stating that faithful, serious online devotion offers the same spiritual opportunities to those who are there in person.
The following is a recently intercepted series of conversations between the Pope and a few of his 7 million Twitter followers — or at least it’s a series of conversations we wish had happened.
