Poll shows growing support for Pa. pot legalization

Polls show support is on the rise for legalizing medical marijuana in Pennsylvania, but the governor and state attorney general both still oppose it.

A recent Franklin and Marshall College survey shows 82 percent of respondents support making it legal to get marijuana if you have a prescription.

Pollster Terry Madonna says what’s interesting is the degree to which they support such a move.

“55 percent of Pennsylvanians strongly favor it, strongly favor it. How about this? Only 14 percent strongly oppose,” he said.

But Gov. Tom Corbett says he counts himself among that 14 percent.

“Listen, I want to see people be healthy. I certainly want to do that. But my background, my training, marijuana is a gateway drug to much harder drugs.”

Corbett made his remarks on Radio Pennsylvania’s Ask the Governor program.

State Attorney General Kathleen Kane has said she opposes decriminalizing marijuana used recreationally, although she has not specified her position on medical marijuana.
