Philadephia Police Officer struck in hit and run

A Philadelphia Police Officer was seriously injured after being struck outside of Jefferson Hospital at 10th and Sansom late Friday night.

WPVI-TV reports the officer was stationed outside of the hospital on a construction detail when she was struck by a driver violating traffic restrictions around 11:30 p.m.

Police tell WPVI-TV two officers witnessed a Ford Focus driving “recklessly” through the construction zone outside of the hospital. Officers attempted to stop the driver and when they approached the vehicle they say it was clear the female driver was intoxicated.

Police report the driver took off when asked to get out of the car, with the car striking a female officer and then backing up and striking her a second time in order to move further out of the construction zone.

According to the report, the car was later pulled over in New Jersey and the woman was taken into custody. She now faces DUI charges in New Jersey and will be returned to Philadelphia to face charges of assaulting a police officer, according to police.

WPVI-TV says the officer has not been identified but has a husband who is also a Philadelphia Police Officer.
