With the summer months fast approaching, Philadelphia Parks and Recreation is kicking off lifeguard recruitment season by offering free training and competitive pay for the city’s youth.
Lifeguards will receive a starting pay of $16.85 an hour, with the potential to earn up to $18 an hour. To apply, people are recommended to review the city’s list of public pools, decide which one they want to work at and then contact that pool’s supervisor.
Qualified lifeguards who submit their applications by April 15 and work 200 hours are eligible for a $1,000 end-of-season bonus. Those who submit their application by May 15 and complete 200 hours are eligible for a $500 bonus. Free lifeguard training is open to all, and applicants ages 16 to 24 can also receive a free Red Cross certification. Costs for candidates aged 25 and over are $175, while recertification is $110.
“Philadelphia Parks & Recreation is not only fulfilling an immediate need in our communities but is also investing in the future of our young people by creating jobs and career pathways,” Susan Slawson, Philadelphia Parks and Rec Commissioner, said in a statement. “Through this program, participants gain lifesaving skills, nationally recognized certifications, and real-world experience they can carry with them for a lifetime. Every lifeguard we train represents a more prepared Philadelphia.”
To be a lifeguard, you must be at least 16 years old, pass the lifeguard screening test and complete a Red Cross lifeguard certification course.
The lifeguard screening test requires applicants to complete a swim- tread- swim sequence without stopping to rest and complete a timed event within a minute and 40 seconds. Below are what’s included in the tests:
- Swim- tread- swim sequence
- Jump into the water and totally submerge, resurface then swim 150 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. Note: Swimming on the back or side is not permitted. Swim goggles are allowed.
- Maintain position at the surface of the water for two minutes by treading water only using legs.
- Swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both.
- Timed swimming event
- Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. Note: The face can be in or out the water. Swim goggles are allowed.
- Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
- Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping the face out, at, or near the surface.
- Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
Applicants must wear a bathing suit and bring a towel to their screening tests. Goggles can also be worn. Free trainings and screenings are available at Lincoln High School and Friends Select School.
