Monday, October 31, 6pm. PennDesign, 210 S. 34th Street, Meyerson Hall, B-3. Planning professor Tom Campanella published a controversial essay claiming that planning has become a trivial profession because the public’s voice has gotten too loud in the process. Harvard professor of Urban Planning & Design, Susan Fainstein will lead a discussion at Penn about the democratization of planning and if the grassroots is really to blame. 13th Street Trial Bike Lane Meeting

Wednesday, November 2, 5:30-7:30pm. University of the Arts, Gershman Hall, Levitt Auditorium, 401 South Broad Street. This summer the City of Philadelphia began testing bike lanes on 13th and 10th streets in Center City. The City is holding an open house on Nov. 2 about the 13th Street bike lane test, and discuss next steps. (Note: The pilot bike lane on 10th Street will be discussed at a separate meeting.)

Gustavo Araoz, president of the International Council of Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), is coming to Penn to discuss international heritage conservation and site management. Water Tower Rec Center skatepark meeting

Wednesday, November 2, 6:30pm. Water Tower, 209-99 E. Hartwell Lane. Join Franklin’s Paine and the Department of Parks and Recreation to discuss their proposal to create a new skatepark at Chestnut Hill’s Water Tower Rec Center.

Urbanized

Thursday, November 3, 6:30pm and 9pm. Drexel University’s Mitchell Auditorium, 3141 Chestnut Street. Gary Hustwit’s new documentary, Urbanized, looks at the ways design affects urban life, particularly in light of the worlds growing, increasingly urbanized population. The movie features planning projects from around the globe, and interviews some of the world’s great designers and thinkers, as well as citizens reshaping their cities. Tickets cost $15 or $13 for AIGA/ISDA/AIA members, and students. Purchase advance tickets online.
