N.J. weighs plan to end ‘double-dipping’
New Jersey lawmakers are considering legislation aimed at ending double-dipping by elected officials.
Some lawmakers, sheriffs, county surrogates and county executives who are eligible to retire can collect a salary and a pension even though they don’t leave the job.
Sen. Steven Oroho, sponsor of a measure that would end that practice, said it’s a matter of public trust and policy.
“There are not that many people in elected office that are actually doing this. However, to me it’s something that should never have existed in the first place,” he said.
Oroho says the legislation won’t save a lot of money because only a few elected officials have used the loophole.
The Senate budget committee has advanced the measure which goes to the full Senate for consideration. The Assembly has not yet acted on the bill.
