N.J. Authorities: SWAT team fatally shoots armed man, 57

Authorities say a southern New Jersey man was fatally shot by police after he fled into the woods with a gun.

Paul Loriquet, spokesman for the state attorney general’s office, said Sunday 57-year-old Patrick Fennell was shot and killed by an Ocean County SWAT team around 10:30 p.m. Saturday.

He says the Little Egg Harbor man’s wife called police and told them her husband was in the basement of their home, where he had weapons, and she thought she heard gunfire.

Loriquet says Fennell fled into the woods and was seen holding a handgun as he left his home. Loriquet says authorities confronted him and fired multiple shots, fatally shooting him. Investigators say a handgun was recovered at the scene.
