NinetyNine’s mayoral campaign-coverage week in review
At high noon each Friday during Philadelphia’s mayoral-primary season, NinetyNine will post a roundup of noteworthy stories to run during that previous week. Miss a couple days of coverage, or just want to catch up over the weekend? We got you covered.
From NinetyNine and NewsWorks:
— Been There, Do This: Mayor Wilson Goode Sr. talks leadership and vision for the city’s future: To launch an ongoing series, NinetyNine sat down with the former Philadelphia mayor to hear what he’d like to see from the city’s next leader.
— PSP-related political committee gives to Williams’ campaign: The Philadelphia School Partnership, the nonprofit that last week offered the school district $25 million to expand charter schools, now has an affiliated political action committee that has donated $7,000 to the mayoral campaign of state Sen. Anthony Williams of Philadelphia.
— Introducing the Philadelphia Mayoral-Race Endorsement Tracker: NinetyNine will keep track of all the announced endorsements in the race and update this post accordingly. (So, if this sort of thing interests you, it’d be a good page to bookmark, don’t you think?)
— Campaign: No, candidate Kenney hasn’t been barred from tweeting: A little birdie told NinetyNine that mayoral candidate Jim Kenney’s campaign staff distanced him from the Twitter send key. The campaign refuted that little birdie.
— Knives come out in Philly mayor’s race: As Dave Davies noted in a post this week, “battle lines are beginning to emerge among candidates as they seek to exploit the records of their rivals.”
— Katz for mayor – again?: Former Republican mayoral candidate Sam Katz has changed his voter registration to unaffiliated, positioning him to run as an independent candidate for mayor in the fall should he so choose. Katz isn’t saying he plans to run for mayor, but he isn’t saying he won’t.
— Mayor spars with a candidate to replace him about Philly pension bonus: The city of Philadelphia is giving a pension bonus to its workers even though the system is severely underfunded. The bonus comes courtesy of a candidate for mayor.
— Mayoral candidates react to the DNC coming to Philly in ’16: Six candidates running for mayor of Philadelphia weigh in on what will likely be the biggest event of their early tenure in July 2016.
From elsewhere:
— Council, past and present, throwing money, support into race (The Next Mayor): City Council members are quietly starting to bet on possible winners through endorsements and campaign contributions as the deadline to file petitions for mayoral candidacy draws closer.
— The Jim Kenney Q&A: The Candidate on Empathy, Vince Fumo, Johnny Doc and Mummers (Citified): This was part one of a two-part series. The second can be found via this link.
— The Anthony Hardy Williams For Mayor TV Spot Is As Vague And Uninspired As You Would Expect (Philebrity): In which a commenter asks, “Did you notice that they used Google Street View for the Cobbs Creek shot?”
— Sam Katz: Former mayoral candidate switches political affiliation to Independent (Next Mayor): Sam Katz, a Mount Airy-based millionaire, has changed his party affiliation from Republican to Independent, prompting speculation that he could again run for mayor this year. (Additonal reading: Ferrick: Sam Katz intrigues as independent, but here’s betting he’s not running)
— Kenney’s departure from Council puts bills he authored in limbo (Inquirer): With almost a year until his seat is filled, Kenney said, he hopes his colleagues see some of his ideas through. As it stands, bills that he introduced that didn’t make it out of committee died with his departure.
