National Boating Safety Week is underway
National Safe Boating Week is underway, and Delaware’s Office of Boating Safety urges everyone to keep safety in mind while out on the water this spring and summer.
Although Delaware has consistently had one of the lowest boating accident rates in the country, last year there were two boat-related fatalities and 21 reported boat accidents on First State waterways. The Coast Guard says nationwide the major factors in boat accidents are operator inattention, operator inexperience, excessive speed, improper lookout and alcohol use. Use of a life jacket also increases the chance of survival in the event of an accident.
