Mt. Airy’s Farmers Market to open in May in front of Weavers Way

After two years at the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia, the Mt. Airy Farmer’s Market will return to its original location in front of the Weavers Way Co-op on Carpenter Lane beginning in May. The Germantown Avenue location did not do as well as some expected.

“We are excited to come back to the Weavers Way site and we hope the Weavers Way Cooperative community can once again support us and the farmers,” said Bob Pierson, founder of Farm to City.

Farm to City is a Philadelphia-based program whose goal is to unite communities, families, and farmers year-round through good locally-grown food.

In addition to the move, some changes have been made to the schedule. Instead of taking place on Tuesdays, it will now take place on Thursdays from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Weavers Way farm staff got an early start. Last Thursday the co-op held its own mini farmers market selling produce from its own farm. Jon McGoran, spokesman for Weavers Way, says they plan to sell produce every Thursday in front of the Mt. Airy store.

Farm to City is currently recruiting farmers that will be able to supply conventional vegetables such as corn, tomatoes, egg plant and squash. They are also hoping to get a farmer that has some specialty vegetables such as Asian or European variety as well as an orchard.

Pierson said the produce will not only be fresher than anywhere else unless you grow it yourself, but there are multiple benefits of supporting the local farmer’s market.

“It benefits the farmers that make their living by selling directly to customers and it’s better for regional economy because people are spending their food dollars in the region and it gets people into a healthier diet if they can increase their consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables grown locally,” said Pierson.

The farmer’s market is expected to begin around strawberry season, which occurs in May.
