MLK Cougars football defeats Lincoln 39-0 for first win of 2014 season

Ed Dunn, head coach of the Martin Luther King High Cougars football team, said it’s no fun being a “winless football team.”

After a pair of season-opening losses, and a 39-0 thrashing of the Lincoln High Rail Splitters on Friday, his team is no longer one. It was the team’s first PIAA AAAA divisional game of the season.

Sophomore quarterback Nasir Boykin threw four touchdowns, all to different receivers, and “we got back on track with our running game,” said Dunn.

“We still have a lot to work to do. We got sloppy with penalties,” he said. “But it’s nice to be off the schneid.”

Like in 2013, the Cougars started the season 0-2.

On Aug. 29, the team began its first season in AAAA division with a 45-19 loss to the Coatesville Red Raiders. A week later, they lost 46-7 to an Archbishop Wood team that defeated it in the city championship game the previous season.

Dunn said that the major difference between this year’s slow start was that the Cougars intentionally scheduled non-divisional games against tougher opponents to get ready for the long haul.
