May I see you in chambers, your honor?

I’m sure it’s just a misunderstanding, but Huntingdon County Pennsylvania Judge Douglas Gummo couldn’t explain to police why he was tipsy, wrapped only in a bed sheet and banging on a female magistrate’s hotel room door at a judicial conference late Friday night.

According to this story by the Harrisburg Patriot News’ Kourtney Geers, Gummo, 42, was arrested and charged with harassment, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness. The judge on the other side of the door wasn’t identified, but she reportedly told police she’d refused Gummo entry to her room earlier, and he’d come back three times knocking.

I guess I’m naive, but as long as I’ve been reporting, I’m still shocked when judges misbehave. When they put on robes, I still expect them to be of higher moral stock than the rest of us. Come to think of it, if Gummo had least put on a robe before going to look for company, he might have had a shot with the cops.

But like all the accused who’ve come before him, he’ll have his day in court. A hat tip to Grassroots Pa, who picked up on this story.
