Legos, movies, jazz: 5 family-fun activities for the weekend

Summer is not winding down. It’s definitely not. But just in case it is, here are some ways to make the last few weekends count.
Friday: Movie under the Stars
The Chestnut Hill Community Association has been sponsoring outdoor summer movies at the Water Tower Recreation Center. This week’s film is for teens and tweens: “Friday Night Lights.” Bring a lawn chair, blanket and some spending money for the PB&J food truck. The food truck arrives at 7 p.m., and the movie begins at 8 p.m.
Friday: Jazz on the Waterfront
Enjoy Smooth Jazz on the Great Plaza from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Take in the sounds of jazz musicians Richard Elliot, Peter White and Euge Groove, better known as Jazz Attack. Bring the kids and some chairs for an evening of sweet sound on the water.
Friday through Sunday: Roller Skating
Did you know that the coolest place to be in the winter is almost as cool in the summer? The River (ice) Rink has been transformed into a roller skating rink. The rink opens at 11 a.m. and remains open until after the kids are in bed. You can purchase tickets in advance and head down to strap on skates, experience the boathouse and enjoy refreshments.
Have you seen it yet? Been planning (like us) to go, but haven’t actually done it? You only have a few more weeks left of summer and then a few more of the exhibition left so time to get going. The Art of the Brick exhibit runs through October 4 at the Franklin Institute.
Friday through Sunday: Skateboard
Have you checked out the new skate park? Whether you’re a newbie or can pull off a Laser Flip, you can have fun participating or just watching those with skills. Head to Paine’s Park behind the Philadelphia Art Museum along the Schuyllkill Banks to try out some of the recently-installed skateable sculptures for a unique challenge.
