Frankford manufacturer joins list of nation’s fastest growing ‘inner-city’ companies

One month after highlighting Globe Dye Works, another Frankford company is getting widespread praise.

East Frankford design collaborator and fabrication company Amuneal was ranked 51st in the 11th annual Inner City 100, a competitive ranking of the fastest-growing companies located in the “inner city” of a U.S. metropolis, last week.

There’s no telling what our friends at the Frankford Gazette will say about being labeled the “inner-city.” See what the list constitutes an inner-city here.

The list comes from the Initiative for a Competitive Inner City, a national nonprofit organization founded in 1994 by a Harvard Business School professor. The organization’s mission is to promote economic prosperity in U.S. inner cities through private sector engagement leading to job, income and wealth creation for local residents.

Amuneal,which opened in 1965, was one of four Philadelphia companies named to the list, as Technically Philly reported, though the only one from the Northeast. The manufacturing company, which focuses on magnetic shielding and retail architectural design, boasts building components for space shuttle missions and claims to be a “premier design collaborator and fabrication company.”

The company is based on the 4700-block of Darrah Street just east of the Margaret Orthodox stop off Frankford Avenue.

Only Denver and Boston, each of which had five companies headquartered there, were better represented than Philadelphia. See the complete list here [PDF]. Philly was better represented than each of the five cities with larger populations: New York and Los Angeles had three, Chicago and Houston had none and Phoenix had two.

Pennsylvania was the third most decorated state with six company nominations; Philadelphia was helped out by two from Pittsburgh. California was by far the best represented state, with 15 companies, followed by Massachusetts with eight.
