Falls of Schuylkill Library’s annual $5 bag of books sale is back

On Nov. 17, the Friends of the Falls of Schuylkill Library will host its annual autumn book sale featuring $5 for a bag of books from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The event will take place at the Falls of the Schuylkill Library on Midvale Ave.

Wendy Moody, retired librarian and East Falls resident, said the purpose of the event is as much about fundraising as it is about building a sense of community.

“It’s not only to raise money for the library, but we always hope that by keeping the prices low and the quality high, a lot of people will discover the library,” said Moody.

At the sale, there will be thousands of books to choose from as well as audiovisual materials such as CDs, DVDs, tapes and children’s material. Specially-priced vintage materials will also be available, which can be as unique as a photography book or an art book.

“We really feel that this is a public service getting books to families that might not be able to afford to own that volume of books,” said Moody.

Proceeds from the fundraiser will be used to purchase additional library materials as well as minimize the cost of renovations to the meeting room where the sale takes place each year.

The preview sale will take place Nov. 14 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. with books priced at $1 each.

Books that remain unsold will be given away for free on Nov. 19 from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Nov. 20 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. If there any books remaining after the events, they will be donated to schools, nursing and retiring homes and prisons.
