Touch points between the public, the press and civic visions

On Thursday, Oct. 8, Harris Steinberg, adjunct assistant professor of city planning at the University of Pennsylvania School of Design and Executive Director of PennPraxis, presented nearly three dozen students in his Public Life, Public Space class at The Annenberg School of Communication with the opportunity to explore in depth the role the press played in the creation of the Civic Vision for the Central Delaware.

It should be noted that Steinberg is filling in for Professor Carolyn Marvin who is on a Fulbright scholarship in India.

Steinberg was joined by Philadelphia Daily News Editorial Page Editor Sandra Shea and PlanPhilly Managing Editor Matt Golas. Both played key roles in covering the two-year long visioning process and Thursday they presented the class with details about how the mainstream press and new media worked to keep the public process that examined six miles of the Delaware Riverfront open and transparent. The class also discussed how lessons learned during that exercise are being applied to present interactions, such as the zoning code revision, between Philadelphia Goverment and the city’s citizens.
