Delaware senators co-sponsor charter school legislation
Del. Senators Chris Coons and Thomas Carper have co-sponsored a bill meant to boost the educational quality in charter schools.
Introduced by Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.), the bill would give grant priority to states that ensure their schools follow the “research-based best practices, evaluate the effectiveness of their authorizers and publicly report such evaluations,” reads a statement from Coons.
The Charter School Quality Act of 2011 would also make student academic achievement a key factor in a school’s renewal and approval processes.
According to Coons’ office, Delaware currently has 19 charters serving almost 9,000 students, and four new charter schools are expected to open this year.
