Sen. Tom Carper (D-Delaware) visited shops and businesses in downtown Dover to promote local holiday shopping.

Small Business Saturday is a national initiative started four years ago by American Express in an effort to get more consumers to support local businesses during the holiday season.

Sen. Carper greeted businesses owners and thanked shoppers for staying local.

Each month, Downtown Dover Partnership hosts “First Friday Gives Back” a downtown event where merchants stay open for business for an extra two hours.

A portion of the money generated from the sales during 5-7 p.m. is donated to a local charity.

The senator was on hand to help Downtown Dover Partnership present this month’s check to Caring Hearts Helping Hands, a non-profit organization that assists needy families.

The organization will use the money to provide Christmas gifts to children.
