Delaware group wants abortion clinics investigated

Members of Delaware Right to Life want Attorney General Beau Biden to launch an investigation into Delaware abortion clinics following the arrest of a Philadelphia abortion doctor on murder charges.

Kermit Gosnell along with nine others are facing charges for running a clinic that performed illegal late-term abortions in Philadelphia.  The group faces nine murder charges and other related offenses.  

Now, Delaware Right to Life members want state authorities to investigate all Delaware abortion clinics to make sure they are abiding by state laws.  

Delaware Right to Life president Nicole Collins says, “Specifically, we ask Mr. Biden to immediately investigate all Delaware abortion clinics, to set up a hotline for women who may have been harmed at these clinics and may wish to file a criminal complaint, and if any criminal activity is alleged, press charges and prosecute any accused party to the fullest extent of the law.”

The Gosnell case has several connections to Delaware.  He worked at least one day a week at Atlantic Women’s Medical Services in Wilmington until at least 2009.  According to the Grand Jury report, it was in Wilmington where Gosnell first met a 17-year-old patient who nearly died after getting a late term abortion.  A neonatologist quoted in the Grand Jury report says the boy was at least 32 weeks, if not more, in gestational age.  

The connections to a Delaware clinic has Right to Life members concerned about what is possibly going on inside other clinics, and they want Biden to investigate.  “We would like him to launch an immediate investigation into not only this clinic, but also all abortion clinics in Delaware just to make sure that they are complying by the rules, that they are safe for women — abortion clinics are never safe for babies — but make sure that they are following the abortion legislation that is on the books in Delaware, and to make sure that nothing is going on here as was happening in Philadelphia,” says Collins.

The grand jury that investigated the Gosnell case blamed a “complete regulatory collapse” for letting his and other abortion clinics to operate unchecked since 1995.

According to Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams, Gosnell and his assistants “induced labor, forced the live birth of viable babies in the sixth, seventh and eighth months of pregnancy and then killed the babies by cutting into the backs of their necks with scissors and severing their spinal cords.”  He says conditions at Gosnell’s clinic were so unsanitary, members of the grand jury had to wear hazardous material suits when they visited the facility.

“There was a jar, jars lining shelves with severed feet that he kept for no medical purpose,” said Williams.  “There were fetal remains in the same exact refrigerator that the employees had their lunch in the same day.”

Dr. Gosnell’s lawyer had no direct comment on the indictment.  He’s asking for people to give his client the presumption of innocence.
