Delaware apartment fire causes $1 million in damage

Residents at a Bear apartment complex had a scary end to the Labor Day holiday when their apartment building went up in flames around 8:30 Monday night.

Firefighters were called to the village of Canterbury Apartments on the 5600 block of Byron Ct. and found heavy smoke and flames when they arrived.  As the fire spread, a second alarm was called.

One resident was injured in the fire and was taken to Christiana Hospital.  Fire officials say the victim’s condition is unknown.  Damage to the apartment building was extensive and is estimated at one million dollars.  Several residents were displaced by the fire and are being helped by the Red Cross.

State Fire Marshal Deputies were on the scene of the fire Tuesday morning trying to identify the origin and cause of the fire.
