Del. DMV to sell 5-digit license plates
Delaware’s Division of Motor Vehicles will soon be selling a new batch of low-digit license plates.
Officials announced Tuesday that a limited number of the black and white plates — with five digits instead of the more common six — will be available starting Oct. 1.
The historic reproduction plates, made from either stainless steel or porcelain, will cost $110 and will be available on a first-come, first served basis at all four DMV locations. Officials say 20 percent of the purchase price of the reproduction plates will go to the DMV.
Low-digit plates are something of a status symbol in Delaware, where people own plate numbers and can buy and sell them. In 2008, the No. 6 plate sold for $675,000.
