Updated – Philly candidates show us the money
Democratic Council at-large candidate Sherrie Cohen, daughter of the late Councilman David Cohen has done a fair job of raising money for her campaign. She’s raised over $122,000 since January 1st, and has $74,503 on hand as of her campaign filing last week.
I mention this prominently because in my haste to post as many candidates’ campaign filings last Friday as possible, I made a clerical error and understated Cohen’s efforts.
It’s an uphill battle to run citywide and unseat one of the five incumbent at-large Democrats, but Cohen is making a credible run at it. Challenger Andy Toy’s numbers are also updated on the chart below – he’s raised an impressive $253,000 and shows $137,000 on hand. Ed Nesmith has also raised a healthy sum, much of it from himself.
One of the most striking things in the campaign finance filings is the potent effort being waged by electricians’ union leader John Dougherty. Local 98’s political director Bobby Henon is running for the 6th district seat being vacated by Northeast Philadelphia Councilwoman Joan Krajewski, and he raised an eye-popping $632,000, far more than any other contender for a City Council seat.
But Dougherty’s efforts aren’t limited to Henon’s race. As a team of Inquirer reporters noted Saturday, the union has contributed at least $10,000 to four other Council hopefuls. They include incumbents Bill Green and Bill Greenlee, and challengers Mark Squilla and Dan Savage.
The chart below shows several missing entries, where candidates’ reports didn’t come in to the city commissioners’ office Friday and couldn’t be found in online filings.
Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds Brown appears to be the only Council incumbent that missed the filing deadline. Her office promises the report will be in today. I’ll post the numbers when I get them. We also now have the campaign finance report for Karen Brown, the candidate backed by the Republican party leadership for mayor. She shows a paltry $552 on hand as she faces self-described libertarian John Featherman for the GOP mayoral nomination. She’ll be relying on the strength of the Republican organization. Featherman managed to raise $5,500 and showed about $1,100 on hand in Friday’s filing.
The reports show several candidates contributed significant sums to their own campaigns. The most striking is Howard Treatman, a political novice from Germantown who’s running one of the best-financed Council campaigns in the city, practically all of it from his own pocket.
Treatman, who’s a real estate developer, has loaned his campaign $200,000 (the last $50,000 came after May 2nd, so it’s not included in the totals below).
Others who put significant sums into their own efforts are 8th district candidate Cindy Bass, who put $50,000 into her own campaign, and Democratic at-large hopeful Ed Nesmith, who put $100,000 into his efforts.
The amounts in the chart below show money raised and spent between January 1st and May 2nd. A few candidates raised money before Jan. 1st, and those receipts aren’t reflected here. I’ll update the chart as more information becomes available.
Many of these reports and more detail are available on the website of the city’s Department of Records.
